How much & how often to water your lawn.

Lush green lawn with visible mow stripes, well-watered turf
If there's one question we hear more than any other, it's this: "How much should I actually be watering?" The honest answer is simpler than most people expect, the trick is being consistent about it.
The weekly target
Most Bermuda and Zoysia lawns in North Texas do best with roughly 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week, including any rainfall. That's the total across the whole week, not per watering session.
Deep and infrequent beats short and frequent
A quick daily sprinkle trains roots to stay shallow, which makes your lawn more vulnerable to heat stress and drought. Instead, water deeply two to three times a week rather than a little bit every day. Deep watering encourages roots to grow further down into the soil, where they're insulated from surface heat and can access moisture longer between waterings.
Deep, infrequent watering builds a lawn that can handle a Texas summer. Shallow, frequent watering builds a lawn that can't.
Timing matters
Early morning is the best time to water, ideally before 10am. Watering in the early morning gives grass time to dry out during the day, which helps prevent fungal issues that thrive in lawns that stay wet overnight. Avoid mowing while turf is still wet from watering or dew.
Adjust for the weather
- Cut back after a good rain, don't water on autopilot.
- Increase slightly during extended stretches of 100°F+ heat.
- Watch for footprints that don't spring back, an early sign your lawn needs water.
- A slightly blue-gray tint across the lawn is another early drought-stress signal.
How this connects to everything else
Watering correctly makes every other service we do more effective. Fertilizer needs water to move into the root zone. Aeration works best when the soil underneath isn't bone dry. And a consistently watered lawn simply recovers faster from mowing, heat, and everyday wear.
