Bermuda vs. Zoysia vs. St. Augustine.

Open green field of warm-season turf grass

Open green field of warm-season turf grass

Nearly every yard we service in Hunt and Rockwall County is growing one of three warm-season grasses. None of them is universally "the best" - the right choice depends on your sun exposure, how the yard gets used, and how much maintenance you actually want to do.

Bermuda

Bermuda is the workhorse of North Texas lawns. It loves full sun, tolerates heat and drought better than almost anything else, and recovers quickly from heavy foot traffic, which makes it a strong pick for yards with kids, pets, or a lot of entertaining space. The tradeoff: it struggles in shade and grows aggressively, so it needs regular mowing to stay looking sharp.

Zoysia

Zoysia splits the difference between Bermuda and St. Augustine. It handles moderate shade better than Bermuda, forms a dense, carpet-like texture that a lot of homeowners love, and is slower-growing, which means less frequent mowing. It's a great fit for yards that get decent sun but aren't fully exposed all day.

St. Augustine

St. Augustine is the go-to for shadier North Texas yards where Bermuda would thin out. It has a broader, coarser blade and spreads through above-ground runners. It's less drought-tolerant than Bermuda or Zoysia and can be more susceptible to certain diseases in humid stretches, so it typically needs a bit more attention to watering and disease watch.

The best grass for your yard is the one that matches your sun exposure, not the one that looks best on a neighbor's lawn across the street.

Quick decision guide

  • Full sun, high traffic, low-maintenance goal: Bermuda.
  • Mixed sun/shade, want a dense, tidy look: Zoysia.
  • Mostly shaded yard: St. Augustine.
